About the Position

Job Title: Adaptive Physical Education Teacher Profession: Education Specialty: Physical Education Duration: Part-Time Shift: Day Hours per Shift: 7.5 Experience: Relevant experience in adaptive physical education License: Valid teaching certificate Certifications: CPR and AED certification preferred Must-Have: Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Special Education, or a related field Description: The Adaptive Physical Education Teacher provides individualized physical education instruction and support to students with disabilities. This role ensures meaningful participation in physical activity and access to the general physical education curriculum. The APE Teacher collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to assess student needs. They develop individualized goals and implement adapted physical education programs that promote motor development, physical fitness, independence, and lifelong wellness. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Special Education, or a related field. Valid teaching certificate with appropriate Physical Education and/or Special Education credentials. Current CPR and AED certification preferred or required upon hire. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Assess students' motor skills, physical fitness, functional abilities, and movement patterns to determine eligibility and program needs. Conduct evaluations and provide written reports to support special education referrals and services. Monitor student progress and maintain accurate documentation of performance and goal attainment. Develop, implement, and monitor IEP goals and objectives related to physical education and motor development. Participate in committee meetings and contribute to educational planning for students receiving special education services. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local special education regulations. Design and deliver adapted physical education instruction that meets the unique needs of students with disabilities. Modify equipment, activities, rules, and instructional strategies to provide safe and inclusive participation opportunities. Create engaging learning environments that promote physical fitness, motor skill development, social interaction, and self-confidence. Collaborate with general education teachers, special education staff, physical therapists, occupational therapists, school nurses, and other service providers to support student success. Provide recommendations regarding accommodations, modifications, and adaptive equipment. Communicate regularly with parents, guardians, and school staff regarding student progress and program goals. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of special education procedures and IEP processes. Understanding of motor development, adaptive physical education practices, and disability-specific accommodations. Ability to develop and implement individualized instructional programs. Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional standards while working with students, families, and staff. Physical Requirements: Ability to demonstrate physical education activities and exercises. Ability to lift, move, and position adaptive equipment as needed. Ability to work in gymnasiums, outdoor environments, and other instructional settings. This position plays a critical role in helping students with disabilities develop the physical, social, and emotional skills necessary for active participation in school and community life.
